In recent years, we have seen a rise in the awareness about climate change and environmental issues. This is as a result of major weather catastrophes around the globe and scientists relating the causes to things like climate change and our lack of respect for the environment. Celebrities such as teenager Greta Thunberg have risen up to showcase her concerns over our long term viability on Earth in terms of how we currently live. Ms. Thunberg alone has managed to bring this movement to a whole new generation who now place environmental concerns high on their agenda and who are likely to do so into the future.
Bea Johnson is another individual who has managed to raise the profile of environmental issues like this and she created the “Zero Waste Movement”. Ms. Johnson who originates from France and who now resides in the USA has steadfastly pushed the notion that households have the ability to dramatically reduce their waste output. She now claims that her household waste output amounts to nothing more than a jar full annually.
While this might seem unattainable for a lot of families, the key thing to remember is that environmental awareness and pro-activeness is something that can be followed in stages otherwise it can seem overwhelming. Families have so much going on in their lives that something like this could easily get pushed down the order of importance. So for example, a family household could implement a reduction in the purchase of any vegetables or fruits that have excess packaging.
They could then as a family, create a compost area where all plant and food waste goes. These are all tangible and easy steps that any family could implement without a large cost outlay. It just requires a degree of organisation and behaviour change. The benefits are that your family grows to understand the importance of the environment and also they learn that they can have a tangible input in how things can be changed, even in small steps.
