Creating An Asian-Style Outdoor Spa In Your Backyard

Over the recent years, spa visits have become an essential part of many people’s selfcare routine. In the UK, the Health and Wellness Spa market is currently valued at £6.4 billion and is expected to grow even more, since getting spa treatments has helped millions of individuals to de-stress and relax. Moreover, spa retreats have become trendy once again as people are flying to popular spa destinations, such as Bali and Thailand, to recharge and get pampered. If a spa retreat in Asia is not in the cards for you this year, why not incorporate a spa-like feel into your home? With a few natural materials and a little effort, you can create a beautiful space where you can relax and enjoy some quality time. Here’s how to create an Asian-style spa in your backyard.

Start with the Foundation

First, start by identifying where you’ll put your mini outdoor spa. You can section off part of your patio, repurpose a garden shed, or you can build a small bamboo house or a tiki hut. Make sure that the hut’s roof doesn’t extend past your perimeter fence, and use sturdy but affordable materials to make the roof, such as aluminum metal roofing to ensure that your hut will withstand bad weather. You can also have a bamboo roof if you want to stay true to the tropical spa aesthetic. The floor can also be made of bamboo since it’s resistant to water and abrasion. Your spa area can have walls on four sides, or it can be open on all sides. If you opt for the latter, plant some bamboo along your perimeter fence so you can have some privacy while you’re in your backyard spa.

Add a Tub

The tub will be the focal point of your mini spa, so you can splurge on a hot tub or go with a more affordable DIY option. A DIY tub made from cedar wood will go with the aesthetic of your spa. You can also take an old water tank, and line it with foam and wooden pallets for an even more inexpensive tub. A large galvanized iron tub can also work if you don’t have carpentry skills– simply fill it up with water, and attach it to a wood-fired spa stove to keep the water warm.

Decorations and Accessories

Decorate your backyard spa with some natural elements to enhance the peaceful vibe of your space. Place a few polished stones on the ground, then add a small table and place a tabletop fountain so you can listen to the soothing sounds of running water while you soak in the tub. Add a few plants too, but choose all green plants or ones with white flowers to stick to the minimalist aesthetic of your  spa. Next, lean a small bamboo ladder on the wall and use it as a rack to hold your towel and bamboo hair drying wrap. You can also display a few personal care items, such as a bamboo hair brush and some lavender soap in a bamboo dish.

Having a spa in your own backyard allows you to have a place where you can get some peace and quiet without having to go on a retreat in another part of the world. Try these design and DIY ideas to create an Asian-style spa in your outdoor space.
