Millions of people across the globe engage in art activities such as painting, drawing, and sculpting as an enjoyable pastime. Although these activities can be both exhilarating and cathartic they can, unfortunately, also harm the environment. Not only can the harsh chemicals found in paint and solvents destroy entire ecosystems, but your own health can be compromised as well. Thankfully, there are a number of ways to make your creative endeavors more eco-friendly while still enjoying all the benefits of engaging in art.
Opt for eco-friendly surfaces
The surface you create your art on is as important as the other materials you use to create your art pieces. Opt for canvases, fabric, and paper made from natural substances like flax, hemp, or bamboo. Surfaces that are chemical-free and made from recycled materials are also a good choice. The interesting feel that some natural and recycled surfaces sport can add a very nice dimension to your artwork. This is particularly noticeable when drawing wildlife such as birds, for example. You can add an almost three-dimensional aspect to your artwork, especially when it comes to sketching the wings and tail. In fact, any elements of nature can benefit from being drawn or painted on a natural, coarser surface.
Pick your materials with care
When stocking up on your art supplies, aim to pick materials that are free of chemical components that could harm the environment. Many types of common paint, including oil and acrylic, contain ingredients such as ammonia, cadmium, and formaldehyde that can also impact your own personal health. Where possible, always opt for toxin-free paints and consider investing in a fume-hood if you do find yourself having to use hazardous materials from time to time. Also, make an effort to ensure any other equipment and materials you use are environmentally friendly. Paint brushes, toothbrushes, and cotton buds made from bamboo can be the perfect green addition to your art kit while easels made from repurposed wood are also becoming very popular.
Be mindful of waste disposal
All your efforts to acquire eco-friendly art material will be in vain if you do not discard it in the correct manner. Not only can you end up with clogged and damaged drains but these materials also pose a fire hazard and can cause grave damage to the environment. Never pour any paint or solvents down the drain or toilet and avoid throwing your empty paint tubes and bottles away with your regular household trash. Instead, take all your hazardous waste to a hazardous waste disposal center or make use of a reputable collection service. If you limit your use of harmful materials though, you will have considerably less harmful waste to dispose of in a responsible manner later on.
Engaging in creative activities such as painting and drawing can be very enjoyable. With some effort, it can also easily become a pastime that is kind to the environment we live in.
